Period 7-8 #3

I don’t want to call attention to the 2-3 million cases of housing discrimination each year because that means there are more houses for my family to live in.  I don’t want to call attention to law enforcement’s racial discrimination techniques because that means I am not being targeted

Untrue, I just don't know how I can change anything.

It's not that I don't want to call attention to it.... I just don't really know anything about it. It isn't brought up in the news.

78butterfly said...

well.. thats good for you. but you are the person benefiting. i think that quote comes down to a choice of being selfish or selfless.

78bstrong said...

Many people would find it easier to just live a simple life without bringing attention to issues. Once you start speaking out, problems arise so I understand why some would find this statement to be true.

78baller said...

yes. This is the main reason white many whites do not stand up for others rights, even when they know its wrong. plain and simple. cant blame whites though. no one would want their advantages taken away

7/8taylorgang said...

I don't know much about it either

78funkeymonkey said...

I think that statement agrees with human nature, however, it is very disturbing that we act like that but its not going to chance. Just because we change our desire to be privilaged above others when it comes to race does not mean we wont redirect it in some other direction, creating different problems.

78PluggerGuysch said...

people need a place to live, and people shouldn't be racially profiled by law enforcement. hands down its ridiculous.

78onelove said...

78butterfly, I agree with you.

78dangles said...

the first part of the statement lacks any reasoning. go get a new house and then tell the world about the discrimination if you're worried.

i'm being targeted, but not bc of my race. i am 18.. the cops know to look out for me.

MrKeyys said...

technically I would be in the minority being targeted but I respect his use of sarcasm to condemn the people who are not.

People don't stand up for things because when there involved in it they keep it quiet. In other words if they benefit from it, they hush up and don't call attention to it. If they were on the other side of the fence though and weren't benefiting from it then they would speak up.

I don't really know a lot about housing discriminaion so its hard for me to formulate an opinion about this...can someone share what they know about it?

78superwoman said...

i completely disagree with this. on sports teams a very famous saying to use is you are only as strong as your weakest link. i think that in order for this country to strive, everyone needs to have equal opportunities, rights, and privileges

78SecretName6798 said...

I disagree. It's imparative that we address racial discrimination with the legal system including law enforcement. I feel as though law enforcement's attitude towards different races reflects the rest of legal's systems way of hadling these issues.

78GenghisTron said...

This is not a very publicized issue, I don't think many people know about it, and even fewer know what they can do about it.

78bstrong said...

78pluggerguysch... but what are you doing about it? just saying its ridiculous isn't going to change anything.

78funkeymonkey said...

Even if this was a more commonly spoken of topic, does anyone actually think people would do anything to loose their advantages?

78butterfly said...

78funkymonkey
what? you lost me there

78awesome said...

I dont know much about it, but if there is discrimination, we should call upon it. If we know we're right, it shouldnt matter to be targeted.

78peace.love said...

78baller,

I completely agree. Since the white people are benefiting, why would they want to lose their opportunities. Despite how wrong this act is, they aren't willing to change because in the end they will have to sacrifice something. As humans we selfishly look out for ourselves rather than the well-being of others.

78PluggerGuysch said...

78superwomen i dont think anyone could have stated that point any better then you did right there.

78strong said...

how many of you would actually oppose law enforcement? ... not a lot.

7/8 JetsFool said...

@7/8superwoman
I agree, good point.

78BleeckerSt. said...

Maybe it's the government that is corrupt for denying housing and their discrimination techniques? This shouldn't be put on us because we, as individual high school students, cannot control the government.

78GenghisTron said...

@78SuperWoman

I think alot of people think of each race as seperate teams though. As though their "team" can only win by beating the other "teams."

I am not saying I agree with it.

78baller said...

genghis tron, the only people that dont know about it are the whites... no offense to anyone

78funkeymonkey said...

78 superwoman: I agree with what youre saying but we do have equal rights and privilages, its not a matter of that. It is a social issue that needs to be dealt with by changing peoples perceptions, because the rights are already there and they are equal.

78PluggerGuysch said...

78bstrong you are absolutely right. im not sure how to help, buts when theres a will theres a way.

GenghisTron78 said...

@78BleeckerSt

Government? The government sells houses now? I was pretty sure real estate agents sold houses.

78onelove said...

78superwoman,
Ever since I could remember, you always hear people saying "equal rights, equal opportunities, equal privileges" blahblah. let's be realistic here, america has been striving for all of those things for years and america still isn't like that. yes, you may only be as strong as your weakest link, but what if your weakest link is yourself?

78butterfly said...

We vote on laws. Sometimes its not always up to the "legal system" Sometimes it boils down to what the majority of people want. And Whites, who have these advantages..are the majority.

78Blue said...

78bsrong... I agree that many people would find it easier to just live a simple life without bringing attention to issues. But, if those people complain and stand there and do nohing about the injustices they see than they are not doing anything to help themselves or oher. I think its better to be active vs passive. i don't think its right to complain if you aren't trying to make any changes or bring up your problems to others.

78awesome said...

78strong, i agree that most people would not go against law enforcement, however that doesnt mean we can't take steps to change the law. Thats not opposing it, thats more like questioning it.

78Plugger true but the people palying target practice in housing are only trying to make money. It just so happens that people with less money have more $$$ on their heads because they are more likely to get stuck in debt.

78MoustacheLady69 said...

@78baller u cant always assume that just cause someone is of a differenet race that they r being discrimnated against when they r pulled over by a police man or arrested cause then that officer wouldnt be doing his job just cause ur skin color is different doesnt mean u are bing targeted if your doing something wrong then there gonna take action on it it has nothing to do with race

78peace.love said...

78superwoman,

I completely agree. As a country, we are only as strong as our weakest link. In order for us to prosper laws need to be in place.

78dangles said...

our country works like this::

white man in a non-white neighborhood wont be pulled over for a suspect of drug purchasing. i do understand that the same would never be said about a non-white in a white neighborhood. nonwhites in white neighborhoods are more likely to be pulled over than whites in a nonwhite neighborhood.

78superwoman said...

this question isnt asking "what can you do about it or how can you help?" but i think that its interesting to see how many people wouldnt know what to do even if they wanted to help. which brings up another issue of how can you change anything if you yourself dont take intiative to find out what s going on in your own country? how many people read the newspaper each day?

78SecretName6798 said...

Mrkeyys:Its important that we realize that we might be the people who you say "we are not." Just because you are aware of a problem and or is the minority being targeted, does not mean that you are not ignoring the issue.
