Block Day Class 2/23 -2/24
HW due Friday- Please comment to this blog entry on the following topic.
How should a government balance the roles of being caretakers of individuals and taking away their rights? When should a government be able to step in to infringe on the rights of individuals? Defend your answer. Is it ever okay? For the safety of that person? What about for the benefit of society? If so, who decides what the benefit of society is?
Test on Monday
We will be having a test on Eugenics on Monday. It will be partially multiple choice/objective, but it will also have some short answer writing.
In class, we studied Buck v. Bell and sterilization laws. We watched a couple videos, but also read and discussed some readings that I will try to post today.

Take a look at the Heinz Dilemma that we looked at in class. Its also found at the link to the right.
Post a comment, at least a paragraph in length, in which you discuss your decision on what you would do in this situation. Your paragraph should also include responses to the following "What If" scenarios:
-If Heinz does not love his wife, should he steal the drug for her? Why or why not?
-If the person dying is a stranger, should Heniz steal the drug for a stranger?
-Should people do anything they can to save a person’s life? Does it depend on who that person is?
-If you feel like commenting on some earlier comments, please do so in order to start a conversation!

Due Monday 02.13.11
From Crash:
Choose two characters. What traits did the movie bring out about them? How did the stereotypes turn out to be incorrect? What methods were used to teach us that we cannot judge others by their race or ethnicity? What does the movie suggest about the nature of stereotyping others? Use examples from the movie Crash to back up your opinions. Three paragraphs (1 page). Due Monday.

Friday 2/4/11 Enjoy Your Weekend
Thank you for great classes today. I know that I enjoyed participating in what we did today, and hopefully you did as well. If you want to go back and look at the silent online conversations, go ahead. Period 2 - the other classes did the same thing as you, but instead of paper, we used the blog.
If you have any comments on you experience in class today or this week, please post them as comments to this blog entry, so that your classmates know they are here.
Have a great weekend!!
Here's the poem from class today:

Period 9 #3
In terms of racism, our country is better off than it was in the 1800’s, the 1930’s and the 1960’s, so that’s good enough with me. We don’t have to focus on it anymore.
Period 9 #2
“Other minorities” (Hispanics, Blacks, Asians) have their own “privileges” so it’s pointless for Whites to think about and call to mind White Privilege. Whites are at as much of a disadvantage of anybody else.
Period 9 #1
I am ok, and I just accept the “sampling error” that Tim Wise speaks about. Even though far more terrorists in this country are white, we let 19 Arab men stand for the entire 700 million Arab population or the 1.5 BILLION Muslim population.
Period 7-8 #3
I don’t want to call attention to the 2-3 million cases of housing discrimination each year because that means there are more houses for my family to live in. I don’t want to call attention to law enforcement’s racial discrimination techniques because that means I am not being targeted

Tim Wise from Thursday's Class
The name of the guy in the videos from yesterday is Tim Wise. I went to check again Friday morning, and they actually took all those videos down. Here is his website though.... http://www.timwise.org/
Identity Project Due Tuesday February 8th
I sincerely apologize for the confusion in 2nd period. Thank you for catching the error for me. I have corrected it for the rest of the classes.
However, just so that everyone is on the same page:
THE PROJECT IS DUE THIS TUESDAY FEBRUARY 8th. Now, no one is able to use the excuse that it was wrong on the handout! I told everyone in class and I am telling everyone right here.
No Homework tonight, other than to think about the idea of White Privilege as well as beginning to formulate your idea for your project.

Homework for tonight is to respond to this statement:
"Every one of us stereotypes."
How does it make you feel to hear this? What do you want to say about this statement?
To get the full homework points, your comment needs to include your feelings and a response to 2 other comments. Address that commenter when you respond to them. For example, you can use the words: "2MightyEagle, why do you feel this way when....I just don't understand that."
If you are one of the first ones to post, please check back later in order to be able to respond to 2 fellow contributors.
