Block Day Class 4/13 - 4/14

Be the Change Module

This assignment is worth 20 points.  In order to receive the points, you must turn in a printed certificate by the end of class.  The certificate will print off with your answers for 10 questions on it.

How do you get the certificate?

You will be watching a series of videos and responding to several questions to find out about the lives of individuals who took it upon themselves to make a difference in the world.

1.  Click on the link to go to Be the Change Website

2.  Click on Register and go through that short process.  You need to do this to answer the questions that are part of this assignment.

3.  Once you are registered, Click on the Explore Now link and login.

4.  Take some time watching each of the 10 minute profile videos for each of the featured people.  There are 5....Vanita, Martin, Yinka, Arn, and Ernest.

5.  Once you have watched a video, roll your mouse over that person's page and click.  You will get one of several questions to answer along with a short video from that upstander.  Answer two answers per upstander (10 total answers).  Sometimes the same question will come up for multiple upstanders.  DO NOT ANSWER THE SAME QUESTION TWICE.
Also, you will be graded on the QUALITY of your 10 responses.

6.  When you have submitted 2 answers for each of the 5 upstanders, you will then be able to print off a certificate.  The certificate will look like this....

7.  Click on the link that says print this certificate with answers and turn it in to get credit for this assignment.

Monday 03.07

HW
Based on the story that we read today - pg 189-191 - please post on this blog or write in your notebook, an entry on the topic of...
Do you believe something terrible could happen in the United States today because of this idea of going along and failing to act as an Upstander?   It doesn't have to be as horrific as the Holocaust.
If yes, why? Don't we have protections against something like that?
If no, why do you feel like we are different from the society the professor described in the story?  Don't we still have hate crimes and utter poverty?

The question is...is 21st century America immune from the power of the group and going along with the crowd to extremes?

Tuesday was Test Day

Hopefully you were not too stressed out.
I appreciate the fact that some of you expressed your appreciation for the first couple weeks of this class.  However, just as some of us love discussing our feelings and reactions, some us need other ways to show that they are focusing and learning from class.  I will continue to try to give you unique ways to show me what you are learning, but tests are a part of it.
My hope was that this test was not too difficult if you were focused in class everyday.

No Homework

Please let me know if you would like to do the little mini-presentation on the history of the Jewish people that leads us to the rise of the Nazis.

Friday 2/4/11 Enjoy Your Weekend

Thank you for great classes today.  I know that I enjoyed participating in what we did today, and hopefully you did as well.  If you want to go back and look at the silent online conversations, go ahead.  Period 2 - the other classes did the same thing as you, but instead of paper, we used the blog.

If you have any comments on you experience in class today or this week, please post them as comments to this blog entry, so that your classmates know they are here.

Have a great weekend!!

Here's the poem from class today:

Period 9 #3

In terms of racism, our country is better off than it was in the 1800’s, the 1930’s and the 1960’s, so that’s good enough with me.  We don’t have to focus on it anymore.

Period 9 #2

“Other minorities” (Hispanics, Blacks, Asians) have their own “privileges” so it’s pointless for Whites to think about and call to mind White Privilege.  Whites are at as much of a disadvantage of anybody else.

Period 9 #1

I am ok, and I just accept the “sampling error” that Tim Wise speaks about.  Even though far more terrorists in this country are white, we let 19 Arab men stand for the entire 700 million Arab population or the 1.5 BILLION Muslim population.
