Period 7-8 #1

I am ok, and I just accept the “sampling error” that Tim Wise speaks about.  Even though far more terrorists in this country are white, we let 19 Arab men stand for the entire 700 million Arab population or the 1.5 BILLION Muslim population.

Arab Muslim terrorists groups DO exist even if not every arab is in one. I'm not saying most are terrorists, but there are a substantial amount of them.

78bstrong said...

I think that is completely unacceptable. America is supposed to be a country that accepts all ethnicities. Muslims and arabs fight in the United States military... we shouldn't persecute them because of 19 bad men.

78dangles said...

those 19 Arab men are part of humongous terrorist organizations (Al-Qaeda) around the world. we have only caught 19 of them in the act, and only in our country. Look around the world at all the terrorism acts. we dont hear it all in our media, but it is there.

78superwoman said...

its dificult to accept that. i feel almost shameful for the way america handles crimes like terrorism and how they stereotype people in this country when this country's "thing" is to be able to live a free and happy life. people who are stereotyped aren't able to live this way.

I think that a lot of people see white as a standard and others, such as Arabs, as foreigners. White is a majority and there are so many different classifications of white people so it is hard to generalize that they are all terrorists.

78Blue said...

Before hearing Time Wise's comment I never thought about this before. I wonder if whites were a minority class if this would still be the same?

78onelove said...

I don't accept that, but I feel as though it will never change.

78bstrong said...

78genghis tron... what proof do you have of that? none. what is substantial?

78funkymonkey said...

I used to accept it, mostly out of ignorance, and I don't know that I have gotten over it, but I want to not think that way anymore.

78GenghisTron said...

It is not discrimination against "Muslims" as a whole, it is acknowledging that large fundamentalist muslim terrorist groups DO exist, and they DO kill people.

Google "9/11"

78butterfly said...

I think that this comment is very wrong. I think that people should be looked at for who they are and what they do individually rather than assuming they are something because they look like part of a particular group.

78peace.love said...

I don't think anyone necesarily thinks about the "sampling error" because this problem has affected most of us directly. Yes we were aware of the discrimination agaisnt arabs and muslims, but until now, I don't think it really hit close to home.

78PluggerGuysch said...

its hard to generalize soo many people into only 19. The thing people need to understand is that terrorists aren't just arab, they can be any color or race. For example the unibomber

MrKeyys (7.8) said...

I am not ok with accepting this error because if it was my race I'd be pissed. It's like saying blame blacks for violence, hispanics for crimes, & asians for any computer hack, ect.

78bstrong said...

78onelove... it will never change if you just sit back and allow it to never change. the second we go at war with a non middle eastern country, then yes it will change.

78onelove said...

78GenghisTron, I dont think 19 Arab men standing for the entire 700 million Arab population is a "substantial amount"

78GenghisTron said...

@78bstrong

19 people carried out the 9/11 planejacking, thousands of terrorists planned, supported, and fought the war after it.

7/8taylorgang said...

I agree with 7/8onelove I don't think it'll change either

78dangles said...

The Qu'ran is the Muslim version of the Bible. In the Qu'ran, it states that those who are not followers of Muslim are to be "destroyed from the earth" and Muslims are to take over. We are worried about their terrorist acts because they are part of their religious beliefs.

78baller said...

No, I am not ok with it because it obviously isnt right. it is just stereotypical to look at someone and to automatically think something of them, no matter what it is. Many people fall victim of this and i am one of them but we all have to gradually start changing our thought process

78MoustacheLady69 said...

i think that jsut casue there has only been the terrorist attacks on us by the 19 arabs i think that we also need to look at where they have done these attacks through out the world and we will find that there are for sure way more arab terrists than we see to be in this country but at the same time its just another stereotype that we associate with arab people and that has a big influence on what people beleive and think.

78awesome said...

I disagree. We do let those 19 arab men stand for their terrorist group but it is not completely unreasonable to have first impression judgements, everybody has them. I think it is more important that you take those 1st impressions fix how you think about someone by getting to know them more.

78SecretName6798 said...

78bstrong: what exactly do you mean by "substantial"? I think we made quite clear that there are even more white terrorists that pose a threat to U.S. security. If ther are more white terrorists, then why are we so focussed on Arabs?

78superwoman said...

78 genghis tron and 78 dangles: yes there are many muslim and arabic terrorist but they dont even count for 50% of all arabs or muslims living in the world let alone this country.

78butterfly said...

78dangles
Yes those particular terrorist may be a part of a group..but every single arab that you see does not belong to that same organization.

78MrKeyys said...

78Blue if whites were the minority the problem would just shift and whoever is in the majority would have the advantage.

JetsFool said...

Unfortunately after 9/11 America has developed stereotypes for Arabs. Those 19 men are the cause for the racism. Although I think its wrong to judge a book by its cover, I fall into the same judgment sometimes. If I saw an Arab on a plane, I would think about the terrorist attacks and would have it in the back of my head.

78PluggerGuysch said...

78GenghisTron its not only arabs who are terrorists. Google unibomber. im not disagreeing with what you are saying, i disagree that you're its just arabs

78bstrong said...

78genghistron... white terrorist groups DO kill too. black terrorist groups kill too... but you are saying we only focus on the muslims which is ignorant.

Mr. Phillips said...

GenghisTron - Substantial amount? Really? Didn't Tim Wise say 129 white terrorists over the last 20 years in a country of 300 million people? vs. 19 Arabs in a world of 700 Million. Mathematically, what is more substantial?

7/8taylorgang said...

7/8pluggerguysch good point people just assume and stereotype that all terrorists are Arab. That is FALSE!

78peace.love said...

78Ghenghis Tron,

There are defintely muslim terrorist groups, but what about the white terrorist groups, black terrorist groups. How about the KKK? Wouldn't you say that is basically a terrorist group? Not all white people are associated with the actions of a small majority of the population, so why should all muslims be associated with this?

78funkeymonkey said...

78BleekerSt: thats probably what they think of us over there. How do you know they dont say "oh, those americans are money grubbing capitalists that try to rule the world"? Arab is a minority here but there are many different kinds of arabs, we are just ignorant to them.

78GenghisTron said...

@78onelove

You are under the impression that the entire Al-Quaeda is only 19 people? Plus how about the Taliban? The Muslim Brotherhood? Hezbollah?

Alot more than 19. A LOT more.

78GenghisTron said...

@78onelove

78BleeckerSt. said...

78dangles
I agree with you. We have a right to be afraid because of that. People came from another country and harmed us. How could Americans not be scared that it might happen again?

78onelove said...

78awesome, no one's going to take the time to fix first impressions with them. You have to be realistic instead of taking the easy way out

Mr. Phillips said...

Dangles....Have you personally read the Quran? Did you read it in Arabic? Or a translation Or is that what you have heard?

78Blue said...

78onelove... Now that the issue has been recognized how do we know it will never change? I believe that we have he power to be social advocates and bring about changes in our country.

78MrKeyys said...

7/8Taylorgang it might never go away totally but we can try to diminish the extent of this problem.

78bstrong said...

78genghistron... we are always going to be at war, so youre saying that no matter who we are at war with, we are going to discriminate against that race? muslims were responsible for 9/11 but we don't discriminate against all the people that were involved in the holocaust.

Mr. Phillips said...

Tron, and you are under the assumption that there are no WHITE FUNDAMENTALIST TERRORISTS outside those 129????

78dangles said...

@78GenghisTron

i like where you are going with this. all who are against you are going by the whole "America means equality for all people" rule. I understand that white people are trying to destroy stuff in our country, but are they trying to destroy our entire nation? Isn't that what terrorism is? Destruction of another's country is terrorism.

I support you Genghis.

78funkeymonkey said...

78taylorgang: Why not? When we did the sheet things thats the only race it came up in....

78GenghisTron said...

Do white terrorist groups kill by the thousands and have religious governments backing them up? For every one "Unibomber" you can name, I can give you an entire muslim terrorist GROUP.

What's the difference between a white and muslim terrorist group? A white terrorist group is small and viewed universally as criminals, a muslim terrorist group has the support of their countries government. Remember Saddam Hussein?

I did not say all muslims are terrorists, I said far more than 19 are.

78SecretName6798 said...

78bstrong: Not to say that Arab terrorist do exists, my point is is that "far more terrorists in this country are white." If this is true, why must we be so affraid of these groups compared to the white terrorists?

78MoustacheLady69 said...

@78 superwoman how else would u suggest that we go about dealing with these crimes. if ur saying that were supposed to live a happy and free life in america and then u get blown up or killed by one of these terrorist then ur certainly not living happy and free anymore cause ull be dead

78PluggerGuysch said...

JetsFool you are completely right. after 9/11 anything muslim related became some thing assumed with terrorism. i also agree its very hard to not generalize a race of people by these 19, but we can try

78BleeckerSt. said...

78funkeymonkey
They may say that about us, but then they are stereotyping us as well.

78peace.love said...

JetsFool,

You are saying just beacause a muslim walks on the plane you will get scared? Because of about 19 muslims, you are scared of all of them now? Stick to your own words, don't judge a book by it's cover.

78GenghisTron said...

@78bstrong

We dont discriminate against Nazis?

78awesome said...

78peacelove
I agree that there are a lot of other terrorist groups, but I also think that they have been recognized as well. I dont think that everyone looks at every muslim and shutters in fear of terrorism. It may be an initial first thought, but a lot of people also want to get rid of this stereotype and they just remind themselves that there are other muslims that are good, and that anybody, any race, can be bad.

7/8 JetsFool said...

@78GenghisTron

That's a perception, the fact is not all terrorist are Arabs. Have to be alert about everyone now a days.

78BleeckerSt. said...

78genghistron
I don't know about you but if I met a Nazi I would probably freak.

78GenghisTron said...

@78bleeckerst

it was sarcasm. They said that we didn't care about the nazis even though they did the holocaust.
